Andrew Smith writes; "my best game was probably in round 3 against Tom Hill" -

AP Smith    Tom Hill

1 e4            c5

2 Nf3           g6

3 d4            cd

4 Nxd4        Bg7

5 Be2          Nc6

6 Nb3         e6

7 0-0           Nge7

8 Nc3          Bxc3 ?!

It's  ambitious to give up the dark square bishop after weakening the dark squares with both 2..g6 & 6...e6

9 bc            d5

10 ed          Qxd5

11 Qe1        Ne5 ?!

Presumably played to stop 12 c4 but now his King gets stuck in the centre because of his lack of dark square control.

12 Ba3!       Nec6 ?!

Now castling kingside really will be difficult, but maybe he envisaged castling queenside.

13 Rd1        Qe4

The Black seems to be powerfully centralised but if my opponent looks closely, he will notice that she is uncomfortably short of squares to move to.

14 Nd4        a6

Not wanting to exchange Knights and undouble my pawns. But he has weakened still more dark squares.

15 Qd2!       Bd7

16 Qg5

I felt that Black may have been hoping to castle queenside. This move scuppers that plan and takes advantage of the weak squares.

16                b5

Perhaps hoping to shut my Ba3 out of the game with 17...b4 and perhaps escape with his king by castling kingside

17 f3

The Black queen has no squares to escape to. So Black has to counter-attack my Queen.

17                h6!

18 Qf6         Qe3+

19 Kh1

I wasted quite a bit of time agonising over whether to play this over or 19 Rf2. Was there any difference. After thinking about it, I was none the wiser !

19               Rg8

20 Nxc6      Nxc6

21 Rxd7!      Kxd7

22 Qxf7+    Ne7

23 Qxe7+   Kc6

24 Bd3       Rad8

25 Be4+

1-0
